The NSW Government in Australia last month announced a $14.7 million investment in training for the cotton and grain industries across the state. The funding is part of the NSW Government’s Ag Skilled strategy, developed in close consultation with Cotton Australia and will be allocated over a three-year period.

Two of Australia’s leading cotton researchers were recently recognised for their contributions to cotton. Dr Mike Bange of CSIRO was awarded the prestigious US Beltwide Award in January for his research in cotton physiology for more than 20 years – becoming the youngest recipient, and only the second Australian recipient.

The cotton industries of Australia and the United States collaborated to promote the Cotton LEADS℠ program at the Intertextile Shanghai Apparel Fabrics trade show, October 13-15, 2015. The Intertextile show attracted over 4,500 exhibitors and 75,000 visitors from more than 30 countries, from all sectors of the textile supply chain – and many Cotton LEADS℠ Partners also exhibited during the show.

High Quality Draft Sequence of Upland Cotton Genome Will Advance Fiber, Fuel, and Food Applications An international consortium, led by Professors Tianzhen Zhang from Nanjing Agricultural University and Z. Jeffery Chen of the University of Texas at Austin, has made publicly available a high-quality draft genome sequence of Upland cotton (Gossypium hirsutum).
